IEEE Ratifies 802.11n, Wireless LAN Specifications to Provide Significantly Improved Data Throughput and Range
Amendment to Successful IEEE 802.11 Standard Enables More Scalable WLANs That Co-exist with Legacy Deployments
Charlotte, NC (September 22, 2009) Internetwork Engineering (IE) announced today that the Standards Board has ratified the IEEE 802.11n™-2009 amendment, defining mechanisms that provide significantly improved data rates and ranges for wireless local area networks (WLANs). This new amendment to the IEEE 802.11 base standard is designed to help the data communications industry address the escalating demands placed on enterprise, home and public WLANs with the rise of higher-bandwidth file transfers and next-generation multimedia applications. WLANs based on IEEE 802.11 are widely deployed, with more than 1 million units shipping per day.
The IEEE 802.11 standard defines how to design interoperable WLAN equipment that provides a variety of capabilities including a wide range of data rates, quality of service, reliability, range optimization, device link options, network management and security.
The 560-page 802.11n amendment-"...WLAN Enhancements for Higher Throughput "--will enable rollout of significantly more scalable WLANs that deliver 10-fold-greater data rates than previously defined while ensuring co-existence with legacy systems and security implementations.
"The higher performance offered by 802.11n is allowing organizations to migrate more applications and clients to the wireless LAN than has been practical to date. IE's involvement in the 802.11n standard development ensures we fully understand the technology and can successfully implement it for our customers," said Sean Rollman, IE's VP-Director of Technology Solutions & Services.
More than 400 individuals from equipment and silicon suppliers, service providers, systems integrators, consulting organizations and academic institutions from more than 20 countries participated in a seven-year effort leading to IEEE 802.11n's ratification. Publication of the amendment is scheduled for mid-October.
As a member of the IEEE Standards Association for the design and development of 802.11n, Dennis Holmes, IE's Mobility Practice Manager, tells us, "This culminates seven years of work by our task group and the IEEE Standards Association. The 802.11n is now an official standard and Internetwork Engineering (IE) is thrilled to have been part of the development."

Unified Communications Transforms business of real estate.
Customer Profile
Fonville Morisey Realty, a Raleigh, NC-based residential real estate company, has 12 branch offices spread across the Triangle, 150 employees and more than 700 contract real estate agents and sales associates.
Situation
An aging phone system coupled with the lack of a fully connected sales force were affecting Fonville Morisey's speed, efficiency, productivity-and sales. The company turned to Internetwork Engineering to meet the needs of its highly-mobile real estate agents while reducing fixed IT costs.
In the competitive North Carolina real estate market, agents must stay connected to buying prospects while managing each requirement necessary to complete the sale of a property. A typical real estate transaction may include dozens of faxes, emails, and voice communication between buyers and sellers and their respective agents, builders, inspectors, and mortgage lenders.
"Communication silos are cumbersome, waste time and resources, and are very inefficient," says John Schweighardt, chief information officer for Fonville Morisey Realty. He recognized the company's need to increase agent productivity and efficiency while striving to gain competitive ground in the market.
"Today's tech-savvy homebuyers are raising the bar on agent accessibility," says Schweighardt. "Clients expect emails or voicemails to be responded to in minutes, not hours or days; or better yet, instant messaging for real time communication."
Schweighardt understood that implementing the optimal solution would mean a major upgrade to the Fonville Morisey phone system to transform the way the company and agents communicate.
Solution
Schweighardt turned to Brad Tuttle of Internetwork Engineering (IE), a Cisco Gold Certified Partner, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. IE holds Cisco advanced specializations in unified communications, network security, wireless connectivity, along with routing and switching. IE's extensive knowledge and experience in configuring unified communications solutions made it possible to create the communications environment Fonville Morisey sought.
Transforming the existing system wasn't simply replacing phones and installing call management software. To deploy a new system, the entire network needed to be evaluated and, in some cases, replaced.
Results
The IE-recommended solution creates a redundant fiber network and IP telephony featuring the Cisco Unified Communications system. It allows agents to send and receive emails, voicemails, and faxes from laptops, PDAs, desktop computers, or cell phones.
Implementing Cisco Unified Personal Communicator with Cisco Unified Presence Server is resulting in a related gain in productivity. Employees now immediately see the availability of the person they are contacting-and their preferred method-providing fast, effective communication.
Through Cisco Unified Communications Manager, there is no longer the need to provide office and cell numbers to customers and colleagues. The single source phone number now provides easy access throughout the sales cycle-something the company had been missing.
"The new system allows us to go from outsourcing many of our IT support tasks to insourcing, providing ongoing monthly savings to our bottom line," says Schweighardt. "When we have agent turnover or they move within or between offices, we no longer require a visit by an outside phone vendor. We can easily complete that change in house. With more than 700 agents, that can lead to significant savings."
Fonville Morisey's future plans include implementing click-to-talk on its high-traffic website, says Schweighardt. "With home shoppers trending towards starting their searches online, Fonville Morisey is positioned to quickly respond when a visitor is ready to take the next step and become a client."
He feels this has been a giant leap forward in achieving goals established for agents and the company.
"Our strategic investment in communications is strengthening our leadership position in the real estate market and changing the competitive landscape in this business."
Mission Statement
IE's mission is to provide our clients with the highest quality technology consulting and integration services for their computing environments. We strive to exceed our client's expectations while helping them achieve their strategic business objectives. At IE, we are 'people connecting people.'

New Brand Reflects Growth
Internetwork Engineering (IE) launched a new brand identity reflecting changes in their industry and milestones in the company's continuing evolution as the leading network solutions firm in the Carolinas.
Greg Rivers, founder and president says, "When we started, more than 10 years ago, information technology was seen as a tool for productivity. We designed and delivered systems that helped our clients do more with less, faster. Today, IT still enhances performance and we deliver, but IT has changed from a tool to a lifeline for business. The networks we design and install enable people to access and share information securely and easily from any location. We provide the platforms today's businesses need to empower their people to achieve. We wanted our brand to reflect this change in the role we play and the growth in our capabilities that make it possible."
IE's new brand identity, launched in late May 2007, includes a new logo and the tagline: people connecting people.
Rivers says, "The new branding reflects both who we are and what we do. We are locally owned and operated. Our employees are people from the communities we serve. The expertise we offer, however, is world class. We have achieved Cisco Certified Gold Partner status (the only one in the Carolinas) and have earned advanced certifications in wireless data, IP communications, data security, and routing and switching. We are prepared and committed to help our customers meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. We are people connecting people."
IE has built a reputation as the Carolina Region's most experienced, knowledgeable and customer focused IT integrator. By focusing on employees, clients and partners while delivering complex, mission-critical data network solutions for reputable companies, IE enables technology that supports client productivity and growth. IE is a leader in technology and service excellence and is recognized by Cisco Systems as a Cisco Certified Gold Partner (the only one in the Carolina region.)
